Recommendations are computed from standard broadcast-sprayer flow math and TeeJet's published droplet-size reference data. Always confirm droplet-size requirements against your product label — some herbicide labels (e.g. dicamba, 2,4-D choline) mandate a specific ASABE droplet category. Questions? Sizing SJ3 StreamJet tips for liquid deicer and anti-icing

Salt brine, magnesium chloride and calcium chloride are applied with TeeJet SJ3 StreamJet tips, which lay the liquid down in three solid streams instead of a fan. Nothing atomizes, so nothing drifts onto the shoulder or the next lane, and the striped pattern leaves bare pavement between the stripes for traction while the brine works. Road crews rate in gallons per lane-mile; parking lots, walkways and airport aprons in gallons per 1,000 square feet.

Step 1: Flow per tip

GPM per tip = (gal per lane-mile × MPH × tip spacing in inches) ÷ (720 × lane width in feet)

For example, 40 gal/lane-mile at 25 mph on 12-inch tip spacing over a 12-foot lane needs 1.39 GPM per tip. For gallons per 1,000 sq ft the formula is (rate × MPH × spacing × 88) ÷ 12,000.

Step 2: Correct for the weight of the brine

23% salt brine weighs about 9.8 lb/gal, 30% magnesium chloride 10.8, 32% calcium chloride 11.1. Heavier liquids flow slower through the same tip, so the selector converts to a water-equivalent flow (× √(lb/gal ÷ 8.34)) before matching it against TeeJet's SJ3 chart. It then returns the SJ3 size, the pressure to run at your speed, the color-matched cap, and the speed range that size can hold with a rate controller.

Speed changes a lot on the route?

An SJ3-VR variable-rate cap opens further as pressure rises, so one size holds your rate across a much wider speed window than a fixed SJ3 tip — useful when a truck runs 15 mph in town and 40 on the highway. The selector shows the VR option next to the fixed tips.

Common questions

How many gallons per lane-mile for anti-icing with salt brine?

Typical anti-icing runs 20–50 gallons per lane-mile depending on the forecast and pavement temperature; deicing after the storm is higher. Parking lots usually run 0.5–1 gallon per 1,000 sq ft. Follow your agency's or product's guidance and calibrate with a catch test before the season.

What SJ3 tip size for 40 gallons per lane-mile?

At 25 mph on 12-inch spacing over a 12-foot lane, salt brine at 40 gal/lane-mile needs about 1.4 GPM per tip — an SJ3-15 around 35 psi. Slow to 15 mph and an SJ3-10 does it. Enter your numbers above for the sizes on our shelf.

Why streams instead of a fan for deicer?

A fan pattern atomizes brine into fine droplets that blow off the road and coat the truck. Solid streams keep every drop on the pavement, and the stripes let tires keep contact with bare surface while the brine spreads. Most DOT specs call for streaming tips for this reason.

Do I need a strainer with SJ3 tips?

SJ3-015 uses a 100 mesh tip strainer; SJ3-02 through SJ3-06 use 50 mesh; SJ3-08 and larger run without one. Brine crystals are the usual cause of a plugged tip, so keep strainers clean.
