Poly Tank Finder
Pick what the tank is for, how many gallons you need, and the space you have. We'll show every Den Hartog tank that fits, with the hoops, skid or bands it needs, and the fittings to plumb it.
What's it for?
How big?
Enter gallons, or work it out from the acres you want to cover per fill.
Will it fit?
Optional. Measure the space in inches — between wheel wells, frame rails, a shed door. Leave blank to skip.
Tanks that match
Plumbing and setting it up
What goes with every tank, and the things that keep a poly tank alive.
| Part | What to pick | |
|---|---|---|
| Outlet bulkhead fitting | Match the pump inlet: 1" for pumps to ~15 GPM, 1-1/4"–1-1/2" for 20–60 GPM, 2" for 100+ GPM transfer. EPDM gasket for most chemicals, Viton for solvents and oils. | Bulkhead fittings → |
| Anti-vortex / sump fitting | Stops the pump sucking air near the bottom of the tank — worth it on any sprayer that runs the tank down. | Anti-vortex flanges → |
| Lid | Vented for sprayers and gravity transfer; non-vented for sealed transport. Den Hartog tanks take 5", 8", 10" or 16" lids depending on the size — check the product page. | Tank lids → |
| Agitation / return | A second bulkhead near the top for the bypass return or a jet agitator keeps the mix in suspension. | Agitators → |
| Pump | Size it for the boom or the transfer time you want. | Pump sizer → |
| Hose & clamps | Suction hose (not discharge hose) from tank to pump so it doesn't collapse. | Hose → |
- Support the whole bottom. Leg and elliptical tanks need their hoops or skid; a 1,000-gallon tank weighs 9,000 lb full and will split a tank that's hanging on its legs.
- Strap it, don't bolt through it. Bands or hoops over the tank, with rubber between steel and poly. Never drill the tank for mounting.
- Specific gravity. Standard tanks are rated to 1.5 SG (most spray mixes and 28% / 32% UAN). Heavy fertilizers like 10-34-0 (1.4) and some suspensions need the 1.9 SG heavy-wall version — tell us the product and we'll pick it.
- UV and winter. Keep it out of the sun when stored and drained before freeze-up. Poly gets brittle below 0 °F — don't hammer on a frozen tank.
- Flush after fertilizer. Salts crystallize in the bulkhead threads; rinse and leave the lid cracked open.
How to pick a poly tank
Four questions choose the tank: what it mounts on, how many gallons, what space it has to fit in, and what you're putting in it. Leg (free-standing) and elliptical tanks are the sprayer standard — low center of gravity, a sump for full drain, and hoops or a skid to carry the weight on a trailer or truck frame. Horizontal leg tanks are the pickup, UTV and small-trailer tank. Vertical tanks store water and fertilizer at the yard. Cone-bottom tanks drain completely for mixing and batching. Inductor tanks mix chemical before it goes to the main tank. Rectangle, low-profile and utility tanks fit odd spaces — truck beds, skid steers, under a deck.
Gallons from acres
Gallons per fill = acres × gallons per acre. At 10 GPA, a 500-gallon tank is 50 acres; at 20 GPA it's 25. Size the tank for the field you want to finish without a refill, and remember the water truck or nurse tank has to keep up — a 1,600-gallon nurse trailer refills a 500-gallon sprayer three times.
Mounting hardware by tank type
| Tank | Needs |
|---|---|
| Leg / elliptical (FS, FM) | Hoop kit (steel bands over the tank) and a skid or cross-members under the sump; larger sizes take a ladder |
| Horizontal leg (HZ), pickup (PCO) | Band / strap kit; tank sits on its molded legs or a flat deck |
| Vertical (VT, GV) | Flat, full-contact pad; poly or steel stand for small sizes that need gravity drain |
| Cone bottom (CB, OC) | Matching poly or steel stand — the cone can't sit on the ground |
| Inductor (IN, INFD) | Stand at working height; full-drain versions need the taller stand |
Common questions
Elliptical or leg tank for a sprayer trailer?
Elliptical when width is limited and you want the lowest center of gravity for road speed; round leg tank when you want more gallons in the length you have. Both need hoops.
Can I haul 32% UAN in a standard tank?
UAN 28–32% is about 1.3 SG, within a standard 1.5 SG tank's rating. 10-34-0 and thiosulfate blends are heavier — ask for the 1.9 SG version if you'll run them regularly.
What size bulkhead fitting?
Match the pump suction port and never smaller than the pump inlet: starving a centrifugal pump on the suction side is the number one cause of "the pump won't build pressure". The pump sizer gives the port size with the pump.
Do you deliver?
Tanks up to about 1,600 gallons travel on a flatbed from our Spokane shop; larger tanks ship direct from Den Hartog by freight. Call for a delivered price.
